What is ADAS?
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and it includes all new smart vehicle technologies which we will be covering.
ADAS is a collective term for the various technological features present in many modern vehicles. These technologies aim to enhance and improve both driver and vehicle safety. ADAS features are becoming more and more common in modern windshields. With these advanced developments, special procedures must be followed when you are getting a windshield installed on many modern vehicles.
The ADAS technologies rely mainly on radar, sensor, or camera technologies. Many modern vehicles are equipped with cameras, radar, LIDAR, and even ultrasound. These devices capture information about the environment and relay it back to control modules that are programmed to watch for specific events.
Technology has always been part of the vehicle, but they mainly provided a monitoring role in a limited way like Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS). Today, ADAS technologies in cars do much more than just monitor. Some assistance systems help you park your car, others warn you when you are drifting out of your lane, and some even attempt to stop your vehicle if approaching an object too quickly.

What ADAS Features Require Calibration?
At Focus Calibration, our ADAS technicians are trained to calibrate all vehicles equipped with Lane Departure Warning Systems (LDWS) and Lake Keep Assist Systems (LKAS)
Many ADAS features don’t require specific calibration. Take most proximity back up “beepers” for example. As long as they are mounted correctly, they’ll beep inside your car even if they are misaligned by a few degrees.
This is not the case for specific ADAS features, especially the ones that face distantly in front of your vehicle as they require extreme precision to function reliably. For example, a smart braking system that applies the brakes a little too late when approaching another car quickly due to a camera that has been aligned too low can be the difference between a scare and an accident.
Some examples of features that may require calibration are:
- Lane Departure Warning
- Lane Keep Assist
- Intelligent Brake Assist
- Smart City Braking
The safety of you and everyone around you always lies with you as the driver. Never rely on “assistance” systems to drive the vehicle for you.
